Here's why clots form. Your body normally releases substances that keep menstrual blood from clotting as it leaves. But on heavy-flow days, when blood pools faster than those can work, small clots form. So a clot is often just a sign of a heavier moment, not a problem.

Dime-size or smaller, now and then = normal

As a rough guide, clots that are about the size of a dime or smaller, showing up here and there on your heavy days, are generally normal. Color can range from bright to dark red, and that's fine too. Darker, older blood is just blood that left a little more slowly.

Red flags: clots quarter-size+, or soaking a pad every hour

Now the red flags. Clots that are regularly the size of a quarter or larger, lots of clots every period, or bleeding so heavy you soak through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours. Those point to heavy menstrual bleeding, which is worth getting checked.

Large or frequent clots and very heavy periods can come from things like fibroids, polyps, or hormonal imbalances, all very manageable once identified. Heavy bleeding can also lower your iron and leave you tired, so it's worth a conversation with your doctor.
