Here's why it's brown. When blood takes longer to leave the uterus, it's exposed to air and oxidizes, the same way a cut turns darker as it dries. So brown discharge is simply old blood, not fresh bleeding.

It's especially normal at a few times. At the very start or end of your period, when flow is light and slow. As light spotting between periods or around ovulation. After sex. And sometimes in early pregnancy or while you're on hormonal birth control.
