What is a chemical pregnancy? It's a very early miscarriage, one that happens shortly after a fertilized egg implants, usually within the first few weeks, often right around when your period was due. It's far more common than most people know, and I want to explain it gently.

Why the name? It's only detected by a test, not a scan

The name sounds clinical, but it just means the pregnancy was detected chemically, by the hormone a test picks up, before it ever grew large enough to see on an ultrasound. So there was a real positive, but the pregnancy stopped developing very early.

Often looks like: a faint positive, then a slightly late period

This is why many go unnoticed. The classic pattern is a positive or faint-positive test, and then a period that arrives a few days late, sometimes a little heavier or crampier than usual. Without an early test, it can simply look like a slightly off period.

It's common — and almost never something you did
